6th Grade:
Students will begin their study of World History by completing a unit about Culture. I like to begin 6th grade with this unit because it helps them develop a respect for different cultures and is a way to connect to their own. Students are working on a unit that focuses on Islam. They are comparing the Islamic religion to Judaism and Catholicism, as well as looking at how the Middle East affects life today.
7th Grade:
Students will begin their two-year study of American History this year. We will begin looking at the different cultures that settled in the Americas: Aztecs, Incans, and Mayans. Students will then explore how Europeans landed in North America and what they did to the native people that lived on the land. Students are learning about Manifest Destiny or the idea that the United States should span from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. After this, they will move into the Road to Civil War.
8th Grade:
Students continue learning American History in their 8th grade year. They will begin with the late 1890's and early 1900's. Two huge vocabulary words they will tackle are: imperialism and progressivism. Students will be exploring the Spanish-American War, World Wars I & II, Cold War, Vietnam, and Civil Rights Movement. Their year will end with the study of the United States Constitution which is a graduation requirement. I am very excited to see them explore these time periods and the connections they are able to make to 2018!
