Epiphany Junior High Reading:
6th Grade:
Students are learning the Reading Workshop model that is implemented in Junior High. They are navigating through different sections of their notebooks and expectations. Junior High reading consists of 4 different parts: a read aloud, looking at different Latin/Greek word roots, guided reading, and independent reading. Students are working with a short story every month which will be used to discuss different elements such as: plot, character traits, indirect and direct characterization. Students are working with a nonfiction article about a super volcano in Yosemite National Park! They are discussing the structure of the text and why it is important. Their next fiction story will be 'The Bracelet'.
7th Grade:
To begin the year, 7th grade reviews the Reading Workshop model that was taught in 6th grade. After the review, they dive right into their first few topics: story elements and plot. Every week students will complete one to two mini-lessons. There will be tests after each unit of study. Guided reading will begin in September, but reading logs should begin the week of August 20th. They will look familiar, but have more difficult comprehension questions! Students will have a new short story every month that focuses on different skills that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Students are working with the narrative poem, 'The Highwayman'. They are annotating the text in a way that high schools will work with Shakespearean plays. There is a heavy use of figurative language this month as well!
8th Grade:
This year students will begin the year reviewing the Reading Workshop model. After this, students will dive into the topics of story elements and plot. Reading logs will begin the week of August 20th and guided reading will start in September! Students will be reading a short story every month that will guide learning. They will review concepts, as well as, be introduced to new more challenging ideas. Students are finishing work with the drama based on 'The Diary of Anne Frank'. They were able to work with vocabulary used with plays as well as take an in-depth look at dramatic irony, dialogue analysis, and theme work. Next, they will look at a nonfiction article about Instagram Influencers and look at the author's purpose of the article.
