It's Wednesday!
Today, we are going to look at the different types of cathedrals that were built during the Middle Ages. Let's take out our notebooks and take a few notes!
Architecture in the Middle Ages:
- Religion was highly important so many of the new buildings in the 1000s-1100s were Cathedrals
- Church leaders & nobles paid for these buildings
- They were built in either the Romanesque or Gothic Styles
- Romanesque Styles:
- Rectangular building with rounded roofs
- There are huge pillars in these cathedrals
- Small windows for light
- Gothic Styles:
- Taller than Romanesque
- Large stained glass windows
- Flying Buttresses (stone supports)
- Church leaders & nobles paid for these buildings
Now that we wrote some notes, let's take a tour of a cathedral or two. Click the links below to tour some of the most famous cathedrals in Europe. Each link should take you to a Google Maps Destination. Use your mouse, finger, and/or stylus to roam around and take note of what you see. (What features and/or characteristics do you see? Is it a Gothic or Romanesque cathedral?)
