- Everyone expected him to become a priest
- Went to Paris & studied Theology
- Theology: study of questions about God
- Debated about God with other students
- Would read all the books he could get his hands on
- Began to hear about Martin Luther
- Started to read about him in secret
- Slowly began to believe what he was saying
- Eventually, he left Paris because it wasn't safe to discuss Luther
- Found safety in Switzerland
