Today, we are going to focus on Irony with in 'The Lottery'! Let's do a quick review about the definition of irony. (You can look in the notes you wrote!)
Here's an example:
When we think of the title, we automatically think of something good or lucky. We all thought someone was going to win a prize, buuuut in the end no one won a prize. A death sentence was what the 'winner' received. This is ironic.
Today, you are going to pick two (2) of the following options and write about the irony, just like I did above. Each example should have 3 sentences! You do not need ACE.

- 1. Verbal Irony:
- what we say is the opposite of what we mean
- can be sarcasm when paired with attitude
- 2. Situational Irony:
- when what happens is the opposite of what we expect to happen
- a contrast between expectation and reality
- the most often referenced type of irony
- 3. Dramatic Irony:
- we (the reader or the audience)knows something the character doesn't know

- You'll love hanging out with my sister. She's as friendly as a rattlesnake.

- A pilot is afraid of flying.
- Situational Irony--We expect a pilot to enjoy flying planes, not be afraid!

- In a suspenseful movie, a character runs into a room to escape someone who is chasing him. Only the audience knows the chaser is already in the room.
- Dramatic Irony--We know what is happening when the character does not!
