Today, we are going to continue working with the period after the Civil War known as Reconstruction. This week we are going to look at the transformation that took place in the South. Let's take our notebooks out and write some notes.
- What does the South look like during Reconstruction?
- After the Civil War, the South is left in shambles. It is destroyed and needs to be rebuilt.
- The Republicans take charge of Southern politics:
- African Americans
- White Southerners
- White settlers from the North
- Now that African Americans have the right to vote, African Americans are going to run for political office.
- Between 1869-1880, 16 African Americans served in the House of Representatives & 2 in the Senate.
- Many Northerners decided to move South to take advantage of cheap land and opportunities.
- Carpetbaggers: brought all their belongings in a cheap bag make of carpet pieces
- Very greedy
- Former Union soldiers
- Scalawags: Southern whites who opposed secession
- Began to side with Republicans

Now that we wrote some notes, we are going to look at the different districts the South was placed under. These districts had to follow different rules before the would fully be readmitted into the United States. Each district was placed under the command of a military leader.
