Today, we are going to continue learning about the Reconstruction Era. You have learned about the different military districts, amendments, plans, and laws that were passed during this period. Now, we are going to look at a political battle that took place during the 1860s...the Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. Take out your notebooks and let's write a few notes about this historic event!
Now, I would like you to watch this video that goes into the trial in a little more detail. Take some notes on it so you can do the follow-up activity at the end of today's lesson.

- once a president is charged by the House of Representatives, a trial is held in the Senate
- If 2/3rds of the Senate votes that a president is guilty, they will be removed from office

- Violated the Tenure of Office Act in August of 1867
- Did not allow a president to remove any governmental officials with out the approval of the Senate
- Johnson removed Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, without the Senate's approval
- The House voted to impeach Johnson
- The trial began in March of 1868 and lasted 3 months
- The president was saved from being removed from office by 1 vote!
- Johnson remained president until his term ended in March of 1869
