Happy Tuesday 8th Grade!
Today, we are going to start our FINAL fiction unit of your Jr. High Career! I was hoping we could do this one in person, but we'll work on our Polynesian Mythology virtually. This unit is fun and different from a lot of things we've done in reading. This is an important unit because Freshmen English usually incorporates Greek mythology and this unit will at least get you started with basic definitions. I would write all the notes I give you AND keep your notebooks for this unit alone!
We are going to start with a pre-reading activity today! Take out your Writing About Reading section and write down the following prompt:
Think about stories you've heard passed down about your grandparents, great grandparents, ancestors, other relatives, and/or friends.
Briefly describe your favorite family story.
Set a timer on your phone, laptop, tablet, etc... for 7 minutes. Write about the above question for the WHOLE TIME. Keep your pen or pencil on the paper and just continue writing. This will help build your writing stamina...this is hard and that is ok!
Once the timer goes off, download a copy of the first myth we will be using this unit. Polynesian mythology is going to give us background for a lot of Hawaiian history. Follow the link below. If you can print your story, that would be great, but if not, I will post the link to the story every day. Once your story is downloaded, read it and be ready for some comprehension activities tomorrow!
